  3. Primary Colors These colors cannot be formed by mixing.

  4. Secondary Colors These colors are formed by mixing equal parts of 2 primary colors.

  5. Tertiary Colors These colors are formed by mixing equal parts of a primary color and the secondary color that are next to each other on the color wheel.

  6. Neutral/Achromatic Colors Colors that are “without color”

  7. Complementary Colors These pairs of color are opposites each other on the color wheel. One primary and a mixture of the other 2 primary colors. Mixed together, they make a neutral color. A color will look more intense (brighter) if its complement is located near it in a painting.

  11. Hue • The name of a color and its position on the wheel.

  12. Chroma • The amount of intensity, brightness, or color in a color. Sometimes how much pigment is in a color.

  13. Value • The lightness or darkness of color.

  14. Intensity • The brightness of a color. Colors can onle be made LESS intense (by mixing with white or black). A more intense color cannot be achieved by mixing.

  15. Tint • Mixing WHITE with a color. Pink is formed by tinting RED.

  16. Shade • Mixing BLACK with a color. Navy Blue is made by shading BLUE.

  17. Neutralizing a Color • Dulling a color by adding grey or the color’s complement.

  18. Color • When the surface of an object reflects certain wavelength of light.

  19. Pigment • Color substances (powder) in nature mixed with liquid to make paint.

  20. Monochromatic • A single hue using different values

  21. Analogous Colors • Colors in the same family, close relationship
