  2. TACOS • Turn to the tools section of your journal • After PEGS, glue in the two strategies for TACOS in your journal

  3. Warm-up (Wednesday) • T what title would you give the following picture • A – Who is this picture for? • C – Are there any words or phrases? • O – Are there any symbols? What do you see? What are the objects? • S – What is the author trying to get you to believe, understand?

  5. Assignment • You will complete two graphic organizers. • Significant Battles of the Civil War • Significant Individuals of the Civil War

  6. The Battle of Galveston • Who: Union and Confederacy (Texas) Navies • What: Blockade of Galveston • When: 1862 & 1863 • Where: Galveston Bay • Why: Union wanted to stop imports and exports • Outcome: Confederacy retook Galveston Bay. The Union retreated. Galveston stayed Confederate

  7. The Battle of Sabine Pass • Who: Union Navy Vs. Confederate Army • What: Union bombed Confederate fort. Confederate disabled Union ships and captured 300 Union troops • When: September 8, 1863 • Where: Sabine Pass • Why: Union wanted to invade Texas • Outcome: Union failed & didn’t invade Texas

The Battle of Palmito Ranch • Who: Confederate and Union troops • What: Confederate troops charged the Union troops and Union troops retreated • When: May 13, 1865 (more than a month after the surrender of Robert E. Lee) • Where: Palmito Ranch near Brownsville • Why: After hearing of Lincoln’s death and Lee’s surrender, Confederate troops still wanted to fight • Outcome: Union troops received reinforcements and Confederate troops retired.

  9. John Bell Hood • Most rapidly promoted leader in the Confederate history of the Civil War • Promoted to colonel of the Texas 4th Infantry

  10. John Reagan • January 15, 1861, Reagan resigned his congressional seat and returned to Texas • Served the Confederate States of America • Attended the Secession convention to convince Governor Houston to secede

  11. Francis Lubbock • Lubbock was elected Governor of Texas during the early years of the Confederacy • He was captured and imprisoned by Union troops after the fall of the Confederacy. Lubbock was kept in solitary confinement until released in late 1865.

  12. Thomas Green • After secession in 1861, Green was elected colonel of the Fifth Texas Volunteer Cavalry • He retreated into Texas & led his men aboard the river steamer Bayou City, to assist in the recapture of Galveston on January 1, 1863

  13. John Magruder • Commissioned a brigadier general in the Confederate service, and was then quickly promoted to major general • He recapture Galveston on January 1, 1863, and temporarily ran off the Union blockading fleet

You will then pick one battle and draw an illustration representing that battle

The Battle for the Texas Coast • Who: Union and Confederacy Navies • What: Captured Brownsville and wanted to capture ports along the coast • When: November 1863 • Where: Brownsville and port town of Indianola • Why: To end imports and exports in Texas • Outcome: Union troops occupied the port town of Indianola

  22. The Battle of Laredo • Who: Colonel Santos Benavides and Tejano troops, union troops • What: Union soldiers tried to storm Laredo • When: Spring of 1864 • Where: Laredo • Why: They tried to burn cotton storage • Outcome: Colonel Santos Benavides and Tejano troops drove off the Union troops

The Red River Campaign • Who: Union troops • What: They tried to invade Texas and move up the Red River • When: Late Spring of 1864 • Where: Louisiana, Henderson, Marshall, and Tyler • Why : Union hoped to destroy the Confederate factories • Outcome: Banks retreated down the Red River. The Confederate forces defeated them
