What is a Charter School? • Tuition-free public school, open to all • Funded by state and federal government, as well as foundations, grants and gifts • Mission driven and focused on a particular approach to education • Allows for more educational options • Independent school district and managed school board elected by parents, teachers and staff • Accountable for student achievement
Lionsgate Mission Themissionof Lionsgate Academy is to provide a transition-oriented and personalized learning program focusing on secondary higher-functioning students on the autism spectrum, that supports their full potential, participation, and self-determination within their school, family and community.
Lionsgate History • Bernadette Groh, RN, and Tamara Phillips, both mothers of a child with autism saw a need for different programming • There was no public school model so new ground had to be forged for the design • Determined that a charter school was the best way to serve the community • Grassroots origins that expanded to include many professionals and educators involved in serving the students with autism
Lionsgate History: The Numbers Opened in 2008 1st year: 60 students; 17 into 35 staff 2nd year: 90 students; 60 staff 3rd year: 130 students; 95 staff Current year: 143 students; 117 staff First graduating class in 2011. Quality of Staff, home grown

The Learning Program • Individual learning plans designed through a continuous process of assessing the developmental, cognitive, and social-emotional needs for each student • Student focused/team directed • Future planning that outlines the student’s educational goals towards completing a high school degree. • Post-Secondary, vocational & career exploration

After School Clubs • Students participate in various clubs based on student interest • Clubs vary from year to year • Club subjects include but are not limited to: • Music • Art • Board Games • Lego Club • Cooking • Team Sports

Open Enrollment • Federal charter law outlines enrollment process • Fall admission is determined through an electronic lottery which will regenerate the waitlist • Students who are not admitted through the lottery will be placed on a waiting list • Applications received after the lottery is held will be added to the end of the waiting list • Limited mid-year enrollment is possible only if space becomes available
Open Enrollment (Continued) Students will be admitted into 7th grade for fall 2012 based on the electronic lottery 8th -10th grade students will be admitted based on availability within the grade level based on the electronic lottery Students will not be placed in 11th - 12th grade or in our 18 -21 AiM program
