PROBLEM STATEMENT • Despite Zimbabwe embarking on biofuel projects and enacting biofuel policies to stimulate biofuel production, benefits from biofuels are far from being realised. • Dramatic acceleration in oil prices since 2004 as a result of supply being more inelastic than it was in the past, • questions about the economic viability of biofuel production in the country? • How significant are biofuels towards energy security ?

  6. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY • The Overall objective of the study ,To analyse the factors that affect the production and distribution of biofuel jatropha based products. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES • Objective 1: •To carry out a multi criteria economic analysis on the factors affecting production an distribution of biofuel products. • Objective 2: •To highlight socio-economic factors affecting biofuel production. • Objective 3: •Identify policy options and measure to increase production and use of biofuels

  7. RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS • • Biofuel production have a significant role towards energy security and economic development • • Socio- economic factors have a positive impact in biofuel production and distribution. • • Biofuel production has improved the livelihood of the farmers

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY • This study is cross sectional and uses a combination of exploratory and analytical approaches • Exploratory is conducted into a research problem where there are very few or no earlier studies to what we can refer for information about the issue or problem. • This is done to look out for patterns, ideas or hypothesis rather than testing or confirming. • The focus is on gaining insights and familiarity with the subject area for rigorous investigation at a later stage (Goddard et al 2003). • exploratory will focus on focus group discussions and key stakeholders. The aim of exploratory research is to determine the factors and distribution of biofuel products. • Second stage is the development of the case studies in order to investigate the factors that affect production and distribution of biofuel products at a micro level. • The case study sample consists of semi structured interviews and observations.

Sample size,inclusion criteria • pragmatic worldview: based on the understanding /assumption that collecting diverse biotypes of data best provides an understanding of the research problem . • The head of the household (male, female, child headed) • 12 Stakeholders have been (key institutions and organisations) • 160 farmers have been interviewed • 3 stage cluster sampling method was used

  11. Findings • Jatropha is being used as fences around gardens,homesteads,contours • Some resettled farmers have up to 5ha under Jatropha though few • Producer price is US$100, way below when compared with maize which is US$285 • Production costs are minimum/@zero costs in some cases

  12. findings • Requires a lot of labour when pruning,harvesting,dehusking and women are heavily involved • Land is a limiting factor • lack of Institutional coordination • Lack of political will • Information asymmetry-leading to higher transaction costs
