  1. Organelles of energy transformation, support and locomotion.

  2. Describe organelles involved in energy transformation. • Energy transformation is the change from one form of energy into another (the making and breaking down of food for energy) • Energy transformations involve photosynthesis and cellular respiration. • Glucose + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide and Water C6H12O6 + 6O2 --- 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy • Carbon Dioxide and Water  Glucose and Oxygen 6CO2 + 6H2O --- C6H12O6 + 6O2

  3. MITOCHONDRIA: “powerhouse” of cell • Releases energy from food molecules • Found in both animal and plant cells • A cell that needs more energy have more mitochondria • Ex: muscles, growing cells, areas of repair

  4. CHLOROPLASTS: • Found in plant cells • Contain pigment called chlorophyll • Allows plants to go through photosynthesis

  5. Describe structures involved in support and locomotion. • CYTOSKELETON: • Tiny rods that crisscross cell • Forms framework to help maintain shape The cytoskeleton is both a muscle and a skeleton, and is responsible for cell movement, cytokinesis, and the organization of the organelles within the cell.

  6. CILIA: • Hair-like projections that move in waves • FLAGELLA: • Long tail-like projection that moves in whip-like motion

  7. Organelles II Quiz • A sperm cell has a long ___ to help it move. • a. cilia b. flagella c. vacuole • Plant cells have ___ to help them go through photosynthesis. • a. cell wall b. central vacuole c. chloroplast • The ___ has the nickname the “powerhouse” of the cell because it releases energy from food. • a. chloroplast b. mitochondria c. ribosome • Your throat has ___ lining it to help catch and move out dust, bacteria, etc. • a. cilia b. flagella c. vacuoles • What are the tiny rods in the cell that help give it some shape? • a. cilia b. cytoskeleton c. cell wall
