  1. Growing Community Assets Sharing experience : shaping practice Welcome to a SURF seminar supported by Highlands and Islands Enterprise Andy Milne, Chief Executive of SURF 08/05/08 CoSLA Conference Centre, Edinburgh

  2. Sharing experience : shaping practice SURF’s Role • Independent and cross sectoral • Bringing all the dimensions and players in regeneration together • Informing and influencing policy

  3. Sharing experience : shaping practice “Same Difference?” (1) “Same Difference” was a SURF Seminar in November 2006 that explored the lessons from community asset-based regeneration in different settings (rural, urban and regional).

  4. Sharing experience : shaping practice “Same Difference?” (2) • Asset based community development is increasingly accepted as a viable and effective approach to building community capacity and confidence regardless of place • The empowerment of communities and individuals through acquiring and developing assets has extensive benefits for society well beyond the better management of local services and resources

  5. Sharing experience : shaping practice “Same Difference?” (3) • The enthusiasm of an asset holder to dispose of that asset is a reasonable guide as to the wisdom of accepting it • Further investment in basic community development will be required if an asset building approach is to be a viable option for more marginalised groups

  6. Sharing experience : shaping practice Growing Community Assets – SURF’s Role • Information – Scotregen Journal and website (www.scotregen.co.uk) • Policy debate – “Food For Thought” discussions • Sharing experience – Today’s seminar: constructive exchange (free event, inputs given freely)
