  2. October 25, 2011 - Touching Spirit Bear - chapters 9 and 10 symbolism Homework None Lesson Essential Question How does a reader determine symbolic objects in a story? Warm Up What are two symbols that we have already discussed in previous chapters and what did each symbolize?

  3. symbol- a person, place or thing that represents something else.

  4. TEXT ANALYSIS: symbolism 2 symbols we have already encountered and what each represented the ingredients and the cake ingredients represent the bad experiences in life the cake the good end result that can come from these bad experiences atoow it represents trust, a link to ancestors

  5. We will now read chapters 9 and 10 ofTouching Spirit Bear together. As we read, think about a possible symbol in these chapters and what it represents. Highlight your ideas in your text and copy them into your notes.

  6. What is the symbol in chapters 9 and 10?

  7. What does this sparrow and what happens to its babies represent?

  8. the nest represents safety, a warm place, but for Cole, he never really had a safe home, he always wanted to run away from it. the mother sparrow represents a caregiver, she will make sure that her babies are ok. For Cole, he has a dad that beats him and a mom that never steps in. the babies represent life...All they want is food, food is energy, energy is life. Even in death, all they wanted was to get back to the safe nest, and get food (life). He makes the decision to live, and even though no one will come take care of him, he decides to get his own food.

  9. 1. Cole comments that “Nobody else cared about him, so why should he care about himself?” Is it true that nobody else cares about him? Even if nobody cares about Cole, why should he care about himself? 2. What happens to the tree with the sparrow’s nest during the electrical storm? 3. Why do you think Cole calls out to see if the baby sparrows are okay? 4. Cole notices that the baby sparrows tried to do something before their death. What was it? How does Cole relate this to his experience growing up? 5. Cole begins to think about the circle of life. What is this circle, according to Cole, and how does he feel about his role in it? 6. Cole thinks “The power to choose was the real power, not the fake power of making others afraid.” Explain this statement. 7. What does Cole catch to eat at the end of this chapter?
