  1. Important Tips to Becoming a Better Dental Assistant

  2. Dental Assistant • Being a dental assistant does not end with assisting clients in their appointments or while paying bills. You hold an important role in the dental office, being the first person patients usually get to speak with. Your job is not entirely administrative. • Chances are you will also be assisting the dentist during procedures. Your interpersonal skills will be among your greatest assets as you perform your duties. Harnessing patient connections can go a long way to strengthening your career in the industry.

  3. Here are more tips to becoming a better dental assistant:

  4. Always Listen and Never Interrupt • To be a good dental assistant, you need to be a good listener first. Every patient you will talk to will each have a unique concern. Let them open up and share their sentiments and do not interrupt. • Before you give your comments or insights, think carefully. Ask questions if there is something that is not clear to you. Don't assume that you already know what a patient wants or needs even if their case is similar to another.

  5. Help Patients Feel Comfortable • Not all patients feel the same way about going to the dentist. Always focus on providing them a positive experience in the dental office before, during, and after getting treatments. Share them what you know about the procedure they are about to go through. • Talk to them about any medical conditions or concerns that they may have. Show that you care about your patients by prioritizing their comfort. If patients can see and feel your genuine concern, they will be more likely to return to your office. Because at the end of the day, it's the people and how they treat patients that make the latter come back.

  6. Stay Proactive • If you have already finished your tasks, don't just wait for someone to call you for help. Look around and see which other tasks need to be completed. Even if they're outside the scope of your responsibilities, think of it as furthering your knowledge about running a dental office. • You can also take time to talk to patients. If dentists are performing procedures, they might need someone to help them change into a new set of instruments. Observe every procedure so you will be better equipped in anticipating dentist needs. It's okay to make mistakes sometimes, but be sure to learn from them.

  7. Keep your Skills up to Date • Always stay updated with the latest in the dental industry. Be sure to complete dental assistant training programs to improve your knowledge and experience. And to as well increase your competency in more areas related to dentistry. • Look out for opportunities to continue your education. There are short-term programs that you can enroll in, which can help you build skills you can benefit from for the long-term.
