  2. History • The Riga City Library (Bibliotheca Rigensis) was established in 1524 • Krisjanis Valdemars established the first public library in 1848 • The Latvian State Library (currently Latvian National Library) was established in 1919 • 1923 Latvian Librarian Association established

Latvian libraries statistic in 2007 • Number of libraries 2 021 • 864 public libraries (851 municipal public libraries, Latvian Library for the Blind with 7 branches, 5 other public libraries); • 45 special libraries; • 48 libraries belonging to an institution of higher education; • 1062 libraries belonging to schools providing general andprofessional education.
