  2. History of Klawock • Klawock closely tied to fishing community • First hatchery in AK built in Klawock in 1878 • State constructed salmon fish hatchery for Klawock in 1978 • Several local canneries in area • Island also greatly influenced by logging industry

  3. Prince of Wales Island Transportation • Klawock Cooperative Association (KCA) located on West Coast of Prince of Wales Island in community of Klawock • KCA depends on air transportation from Ketchikan • Ferry transportation also available • Klawock connected by island roads system to surrounding communities • Small boat harbor and boat launch

Klawock Cooperative Association IGAP Program • IGAP Program started in October 1999 • Two environmental staff • Environmental planner and technician • Staff participate in Tribal Environmental Coalition (TEC) • Environmental staff attend monthly TEC meetings and participate in annual TEC Earth Day Fair

  5. KCA Environmental Issues • Solid waste disposal • Household hazardous waste • Abandoned vehicles • Contaminated mine sites • Klawock Watershed Project

  6. KCA Air Quality Concerns • Klawock city burn site • Smoke from large burn site affects village residential area • Dust from unpaved roads

  7. KCA Future Air Quality Projects • Complete air quality assessment • Community education & outreach • Indoor air quality residential assessments

  8. Toxic Air Pollutants • Also known as hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) • 188 HAPs defined by EPA • Air pollutants known or suspected to cause cancer • EPA working with tribes, states and locals to reduce air toxics in the environment

  9. Examples of Air Toxics • Benzene - gasoline • Asbestos • Mercury (moves to fish, waterfowl, some mammals) • Lead - leaded gasoline • Arsenic • Formaldehyde
