  14. MRM Midyear Regional Meeting Biosimilars: APhA-ASP advocates for post-marketing studies of biosimilars to be required by the Food and Drug Administration to assure that biosimilars are safe and effective in a large, real-world patient population. APhA-ASP recognizes that biosimilar medications have the potential to lower costs while providing safe and effective therapy to patients and therefore encourages third-party payors to institute policies and update their formularies to include biosimilar medications and for states to approve regulatory procedures regarding the approval of biosimilars in order to provide an avenue for biosimilars to become available for patients.
  15. MRM Midyear Regional Meeting Equal Opportunity Recruitment APhA-ASP further supports policy 1981.1 and condemns unethical, inaccurate, and unprofessional advertising and other misleading methods of recruitment of students into pharmacy school. APhA-ASP urges pharmacy schools to recruit students without unlawful regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, handicap, veteran status, or any other discriminatory form of recruitment. APhA-ASP further supports policy 1974.25 and encourages colleges of pharmacy to identify deficiencies in minority enrollment and set goals with a timetable for correction of such deficiencies.
  16. MRM Midyear Regional Meeting Health Literacy APhA‐ASP supports state and federal legislative efforts, laws, and regulations that encourage pharmacies as well as hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities to take back used needles, lancets, and syringes through a process that minimizes liability and financial burden to all stakeholders and maintains the confidentiality of those who utilize these programs. APhA-ASP encourages pharmacies as well as hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities to develop and implement free, confidential collection programs for needles, lancets, and syringes used outside of the healthcare setting.
  17. MRM Midyear Regional Meeting Expansion of drug-take away program. APhA-ASP recommends that Plan B One-Step (Levonorgestrel) emergency contraceptive be dispensed behind a pharmacy counter in order that pharmacists may aid in consultation issues including, but not limited to, proper use and side effects.
  18. MRM Midyear Regional Meeting Increasing Access to Pharmacists in Rural Areas APhA-ASP encourages reimbursement systems, among other efforts, to grow and sustain rural pharmacies, as well as incentives to promote pharmacists to practice in rural areas. Other efforts: Financial incentives (i.e. government-provided facilities, loan repayment, benefits, etc.), exceptions for scope of practice in rural settings, increasing training and education in rural areas.
  19. MRM Midyear Regional Meeting Sharps Disposal Programs APhA-ASP supports the implementation of a national sharps disposal program to be established within pharmacies to provide patients with an affordable, accessible, and safe means to discard their used needles/syringes without having to exchange them.

  21. track-and-trace legislation Plain and simple, this legislation will help ensure that providers and their patients have access to high-quality compounded drugs,” said Senate HELP Committee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA).  “This legislation will improve the safety of compounded drugs by clarifying the oversight responsibilities of the FDA over large-volume compounders and by holding facilities to high quality standards.  This bill also calls for an unprecedented tracing system that will track prescription drugs from manufacturing to distribution. I commend the bipartisan spirit that brought this compromise proposal together.” On November 12, the Senate voted 97–1 to advance the Drug Quality and Security Act (H.R. 3204) on a cloture motion—a procedure by which the Senate can vote to place a time limit on consideration of a bill to overcome a filibuster.
