  1. Warm-up #7 • Read the Mayan Astronomy and Calendar-Making handout. Then copy and answer the two questions below: • How are the Sacred Round/year (Tzolkin) and the Secular Round/year different? • Do you think it’s a good idea to have two calendar systems? Why?

  2. How do the Maya differentiate between religious and non religious days?

  3. Sacred Round Activity • Mayan priests were responsible for reading the calendar. • In table groups, you will be given four problems that you will have to use the Tzolkin(Sacred Round) to solve. • Record your group’s answers and explanations on a lose-leaf piece of notebook paper (1 paper per group). • When you are finished you can bring your materials to Ms. Schaller and mark your text/summarize the Astronomy and Calendar handout for homework.

  4. Mayan Astronomy & Calendar-Making Reader • Read • Glue onto page LA 21 of your notebook. • Mark the text: • Number • Circle • Underline • Annotate • Write a one paragraph summary on the back of your paper (5-6 sentences).
