  2. Learning Outcomes • Demonstrate proper removal of soiled gloves in the workplace and lab. • Explain why gloves are worn as PPE in the workplace and lab. • List 3 situations/places when gloves should be removed or not worn.

  3. PPE = Personal Protective Equipment • Masks • Gowns • Shoes • Goggles • Gloves

  4. Why are gloves worn? To protect yourself AND others (patients, customers, clients, victims) from contamination (poison, infection, harm, bodily fluids)

  5. When should gloves be worn? • Any surgical procedure • Contact with bodily fluids • Dangerous/infectious organisms • Emergency situations • Childbirth • Preparing chemotherapy • Food preparation

  6. When are gloves not worn? • Taking vital signs (TPR +BP) • Bathing and dressing a patient • Using the telephone • Writing in a chart/lab notebook • Serving food (covered plate) • Changing bedding • In public areas (elevator, break room)

  7. Proper Glove Removal (point hands downward; wash hands after)

  8. Your Turn! • Write the procedure on the illustrated paper provided • Take the skills test

  9. Glove Removal • Pinch the outside of one glove near the wrist • Remove glove completely, inside out, discarding it in the trash can • Run finger of ungloved hand between arm and glove – do not touch the outside • Remove second glove with a twist of the wrist, discarding it in the trash can • Wash hands
