  2. CooperationthroughCommunication • To improve teacher- student relationships • Congruent communication • 6 principles

  3. Principle 1 Express Sane messages (Starko et al. p. 344, 2003) Through communication express to the student that he is valued as person, in a safe environment, that you are always available and understanding so that you focus on his actions instead attacking his person.

  4. Principle 2 Deal with feelings (Starko et al. p. 345, 2003) Teachers play the role of a mediator to help deal with ideas and feeling expressed by the students.

  5. Principle 3 Eliminate stereotypes and labels (Starko et al. p. 345, 2003) Promote personal and cultural acceptance and identify their goals and aspirations to motivate students to reach those goals.

  6. Principle 4 Use praise carefully (Starko et al. p. 345-346, 2003) Praise is to reinforce desired behavior. The teacher gives praise to the students that are demonstrating the proper behavior and at the same time, it signals others to do the same. Praise should not be judgmental or overused.

  7. Principle 5 Build cooperation (Starko et al. p. 346, 2003) Build an atmosphere in the classroom that allows students to feel a sense of independence and responsibility for the environment.

  8. Principle 6 Communicate anger (Starko et al. p. 346- 347, 2003) Ginottadvises the use of “I message,” which contains a description of the behavior and an expression of how it makes the teacher feel.

  9. Scenario 1 Yesenia has earned a perfect score on all her spelling tests and she feels proud. The teacher says, “Yesenia, you are a good student you have 100 percent on all your spelling tests this year. I know your parents are so proud of you and I am, too!” -According to Ginott is this correct?

  10. Scenario 2 After you ask students to work quietly they all begin to horse around. Only a couple of students are following directions and the period will be over in 15 minutes. • What should you do? • What principle does it fall under?

  11. Scenario 3 Rafael is upset that he did not finish his timed math test promptly and did not receive a sticker on his paper like his friend David. He says, “I am not as smart as David. I’m stupid.” -As the teacher you over heard. What should you do?
