  2. Poe Review Discuss with your group 2 or 3 things that you learned about Edgar Allan Poe from the video on Monday and the letter/dialogue activity on Tuesday.

  3. Annotation Notes Annotation: Underlining important information in the text and writing explanations and comments in the margins. • underline as you read • go back after you read and write explanations and comments about the section you underlined

Annotation Focus for “Cask of…” As you read, underline descriptive words and details. • Ex. #1: the thousand injuries of Fortunado • Ex. #2: the vaults are insufferably damp After you read, go back and write your own comments and explanations in the margins.   6. Background for “Cask of Amontillado” Cask = a container shaped like a barrel for holding liquids. Amontillado = A pale dry sherry (a strong Spanish wine).

Background for “Cask of Amontillado” Carnevale, also known as carnival or mardi gras, is celebrated in Italy and many places around the world 40 days before Easter, a final party before Ash Wednesday and the restrictions of Lent. Carnevale in Italy is a huge winter festival celebrated with parades, masquerade balls, entertainment, music, and parties.

  8. Background for “Cask of Amontillado” Catacombs are human-made subterranean passageways for religious practice, typically burial places. Many are under cities or wealthy estates and have other uses including wine storage.
