Today’s Job Market • Looking for work instead of a job – there is work out there just not a traditional job • Only 30% of the workforce have traditional jobs • 80% of employment opportunities today are never advertised • Much is outsourced to overseas for cost reduction • Contract work • Offers flexibility and advantages to both employer and contractor • Companies have a project focus – looking for people to do specific work, short term

Traditional vs Contemporary • Traditional – stayed in one job your whole life, relationship between worker and employer was more paternalistic • It became your identity/worth/value in society • It provided a sense of belonging, dignity, and self-respect • Gave you benefits/perks – regular salary increases/promotions, medical, life insurance, etc • Contemporary – your security is tied to the value that the company perceives you to bring to their operation at any given time • You will be asked to wear more hats in your job than in the past • You could be more involved in the decision-making processes affecting where the company is going

Career Facts • According to the “Alberta Regional Occupational Demand Outlook” more than 60% of all new jobs created in the coming years will require post-secondary training • From 2001 – 2011, employment for Canadians with a college or university education increased by 33.3%, while overall employment rose by 15.8 %. During the same time, employment among those with only a high school education or less decreased by a total of 4.4% • Transition from high school to adult life is taking longer than it used to • Students have watched their parents and other adults struggle with career issues and are conscious of trying to avoid making similar mistakes

Facts Continued • Not getting a post-secondary education will cost you more than getting one – taking into account the cost of the education and the income you don’t earn wile you are in school – stats show that Post-secondary graduates earn over $1million more during their career than those only with a HS diploma • Post-secondary education includes college, technical school, apprenticeship programs, certificate training programs, etc • North American students switch their majors 3 TIMES – most credits transfer, most skills transfer, and employers are looking for a broad range of experience and flexibility • FALSE – you need a university degree to get a high-paying job

Resume Components • Letterhead – clearly shows your contact information • Profile statement – highlights current status, personal characteristics, and applicable experience • Accomplishments – highlights the best you have accomplished • Work Experience – listed most current to oldest experience, describes what you did in each job • Education and Training – only high school (now, later only post-secondary education or certificates) • Optional – Volunteer or Computer Skills – • Interests and Skills – only 3, shows balance in life • References – 3 people who can speak to your work ethic, personal characteristics. – Be sure to ask them
