  1. Discovery of the Titanic Lesson 1-6 Comparing and Ordering Integers (Objective 1h)

  2. The RMS Titanic – A story of tragedy. • At the time, the RMS Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world. The Titanic used some of the most advanced technology available and was believed to have been "unsinkable.” • At 11:40 PM on the cold night of April 14, 1912 the Titanic struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England en route to New York City. • Two hours and forty minutes later, she sank beneath the waves of the icy North Atlantic carrying over 1,500 souls to her grave, 2.5 miles below the ocean’s surface. • Only 705 people survived what was considered the worst marine disaster in history.

  3. New York Times Headlines Captain Edward John Smith

  4. What happened to Captain Smith? • From Captain Smith, just moments before the Titanic plunged into the sea: “Men, you have done your full duty. You can do no more. Abandon your cabin. I release you. Every man for himself”. • Exactly how Captain Smith spent his last minutes alive is pretty much a mystery. Theory 1) A rich Philadelphia banker reported that Smith remained at his post on the bridge and went down with the ship, showing no panic or fear whatsoever. Theory 2) One of the Titanic cooks, a fireman, and a passenger named Charles Williams all claimed that shortly after the sinking, Captain Smith was seen swimming around the icy waters with an infant in his arms. When their boat went to rescue Captain Smith, he handed them the child, but refused to get in himself. He then pushed himself away from the lifeboat, and slowly sank from sight. Isaac H. Maynard Entree Cook , RMS Titanic April 30, 1912 Maynard was rescued on Lifeboat B. The Press later labeled him as, “The steward who took the baby from Captain Smith's arms”. This was following unconfirmed reports that Smith had delivered a child to the boat before swimming off to his death.

  5. Discovery • The Titanic sank and was never to be seen again, her exact whereabouts unknown, until September 1, 1985 when she was discovered by deep sea explorer Dr. Robert Ballard. • The titanic was discovered 3,925 meters (2.5 miles) below the surface of the ocean.

  6. Let’s describe the depth. • The Titanic is located below the surface of the ocean. Would the depth be represented as a positive or negative number? Answer: ________________ • What number could describe the depth of the Titanic (in meters)? Answer: _________ meters • What number could describe the depth of the whale and seal (in meters)? Answer: _________ meters • Where would 0 go on the chart? • If all the depths on the chart were written as negative numbers, what depth represents the smallest number? Answer: _________ meters negative -3,800 -1,500 -11,000

  7. Ordering integers using a number line. • Integers are the whole numbers and their opposites. …-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3… Is -.25 an integer? Answer: _____ • Two numbers that are the same distance from 0 on a number line are opposites. What is the opposite of 2? Answer: _____ What is the opposite of -5? Answer: _____ • You can “plot” integers on a number line to help you put them in order. • The further to the left a number is on the number line, the SMALLER it is! Example: -7 < -2 NO -2 5

  8. Meet Mr. Smiley Mr. Smiley is going to help us order some integers. 1) Plot the following integers on the number line: -3, -1, -4, 2 2) Order them from least to greatest: Answer: ________________________ -4, -3, -1, 2

  9. You Try! 1) Plot the following on the number line: -4, 8, -2, -6, 3 Then order from least to greatest. Answer: ________________ 2) Use <, >, or = to compare the integers: -280 ____ 49 3) Order the following from least to greatest without using a number line: 25, 16, 0, -1, 10, -4, -32 Answer: _________________________ -6, -4, -2, 3, 8 > - 32, -4, -1, 0, 10, 16, 25

  10. You Try! MCT2 Practice • 4) The following shows the current proceeds for a local fundraiser: Brittany: collected 2,145 James: owes 812 Henry: collected 316 Abby: owes 2,154 Will: collected 3,837 Which set shows the amount of money collected from least to greatest? A. 316; –812; 2,145; –2,154; 3,837 B. 3,837; –2,154; 2,145; –812; 316 C. –2,154; –812; 316; 2,145; 3,837 D. –812; –2,154; 316; 2,145; 3,837  -812  -2,154
