  1. Infection Control Isolation Precautions

  2. Airborne Precaution • For pts. who has a pathogen that is transmitted by secretion droplets (through the air) • Droplets are small particles (suspend in the air) • Ex. = chicken pox, TB, measles

  3. Requirements (Airborne) • Private room • Room air filtered before circulating to other areas • Filter mask before entering room • Filter mask for pt. if leaving room • Gloves required • Single use equipment

  4. Droplet Precaution • For pts. who has a pathogen that is transmitted by large droplets (suspends in air) • All droplets expelled by talking, laughing, coughing, breathing, sneezing • Ex.= Pneumonia, Pertussis, Meningitis

  5. Requirements (Droplet) • Private room • Maintain 3 ft. of space between pt. • Surgical mask required if closer than 3 ft. • Surgical mask if pt. leaves room • Gloves required • Single use equipment

  6. Contact Precaution • For pts. With infection that is spread from person to person by direct/indirect contact • Ex.= E. Coli, Infected wound with drainage, Scabies, Hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, Genital herpes (with active lesions)

  7. Requirements (Contact) • Private room • Gloves required when entering room • Gown required when coming in contact with pt. • All PPE’s must be removed before leaving room • Single use equipment • Transport pt. ONLY for essential needs

  8. Reverse Isolation • For pts. with weak immune system • Ex. = • Severely burned • Recent organ transplant • Chemotherapy • Failed immune system

  9. Requirements (Reverse Isolation) • Sterile glove, gown, mask when coming in contact with pt. • Room air must be filtered • No children under 12 allowed to visit • Limit # of visitors • Equipment must be disinfected/sterile before using
