  3. Clovis converts to Christianity. • Baptized 3,000 of his soldiers • Established Christianity as the religion of his realm

  4. Charles Martell ( the Hammer) Defeated the Moors at Tours in 732 AD

  5. Pepin III (Pepin the Short) • He is crowned by the Pope • Pope names him, “King by the grace of God.” • What authority does this give Pepin? • God’s authority to rule!!

  6. Pepin goes on a mission for the Pope!! • Pepin’s mission is to go fight the Lombards • Pepin defeats the Lombards! • Cool, but what does he do with the land? • He gives it to the Pope Kingdom of the Lombards

  7. “Donation of Pepin” • This region became the PAPAL STATES • The area was ruled by the Pope. • Here, the Pope was leader of the government • the religion and sometimes • even the army! • From now on, the Franks would be the protectors of the Papacy and the Popes would crown the Frankish kings.

Charlemagne wanted an empire like the Romans. • On Christmas day 800 AD, the Pope crowned him “Emperor of the Romans” • The “Holy Roman Empire (HRE)” is now established.” • How does one say empire in German? • In German it’s known as the “first REICH.” CHARLEMAGNE (KARL DER GROSSE) Ruled from 768 - 814 The most famous Frankish King!!
