  3. Kings of the Great House • The New Kingdom began in 1552 B.C. • Egyptian kings took the title of pharaoh, meaning “great house” • Egyptians believed that the flesh of their gods was made of gold

  4. A Time of Change Changes occurred in Egypt during the rule of Amenhotep IV who worshipped only one Egyptian god During the rule of Tutankhamen the old Egyptian gods were restored Ramses II successfully defended Egypt and made the kingdom prosper

  5. Egyptian Art and Architecture Art, literature and architecture were most important in ancient Egypt Most of the monumental architecture that remains today was built of stone, although the main construction material was mud brick

Amenhotep IV • He and his wife, Nefertiti, abandoned the worship of Amon and other gods • Favored Aten, the god of the sun • Changed his name to Akhenaton, meaning “server of the Aten.” • Had the names of the other gods removed from temples and tombs • Moved Egypt’s religious capital to a new city,Akhetaton

Tutankhamen (pronounced: too-tang-kah-muhn) • Took over the throne at 9 years old (his name at the time was Tutankhaton) • Pressured by advisors to restore old Egyptian gods • Changed his name to Tutankhamen, or “living image of Amon” • Died at age 18; he was buried in a solid-gold coffin in a tomb packed with treasure

  8. Ramses II • Came to power in about 1289 B.C., ruled for 65 years • Also known as Ramses the Great • He made the kingdom prosperous • Early on, he battled the Hittites • Later, he focused on building magnificent temples all over Egypt.

  10. Summary Pharaohs of the New Kingdom of Egypt enlarged Egypt’s territory, expanded trade, and started massive building projects. Egyptian society was divided into different social classes. Most people worked as farmers and lived in rural areas The New Kingdom was also a time of achievement in architecture, art, and literature.
