Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health, 2000 Dental caries is the most common chronic disease of childhood, affecting about half of children by middle childhood, and over 80% by late adolescence. Research demonstrates that oral and dental diseases have a significant impact on children and families. Many Americans lack access to needed oral health care, including many infants and young children.
