Representing The Time Period • Social acceptance was different back then because it was not acceptable to be a witch, a prostitute, gambler, and an alcoholic. • The local color was shown by “ I reckon they’re after somebody”, “It’s agin justice”, and “to let this yer young man from roaring camp”. • Society rules have evolved because people no longer are forced out of society.

  3. Literary Elements • Mood is suspicious and ominous because they are all being ostracized • Foreshadows their death by how cold it is and the fact that Duchess and Piney went to sleep in the freezing cabin.
