  1. JATS and the Standards Ecosystem Presented by Bruce D. Rosenblum CEO Inera Incorporated JATS-Con, 1 April 2014

  2. No Man Is An Island No man is an island,Entire of itself,Every man is a piece of the continent,A part of the main.If a clod be washed away by the sea,Europe is the less.As well as if a promontory were.As well as if a manor of thy friend'sOr of thine own were:Any man's death diminishes me,Because I am involved in mankind,And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee. John Donne

  3. Metadata Ecosystem • JATS started as a markup solution • JATS is now a workflow solution • Integrates full text content & rich metadata • Facilitates • Metadata transmittal of submission • End-to-end production activities • Distribution of metadata to customers

  4. JATS-Related Standards and Projects • Supplemental Journal Article Materials • ORCID • PIE-J • JAV • CrossRef • CrossMark • CrossRef Metadata Services • FundRef • LicenseRef • Open Access Metadata and Indicators • CHORUS

  5. Supplemental Journal Article Materials • Joint NISO/NFAIS project (NISO RP-15-2013) • Developed a Recommended Practice for publisher inclusion, handling, display, and preservation of supplemental journal article materials • http://www.niso.org/workrooms/supplemental • Extending JATS to include the NISO/NFAIS Recommended Practices for Online Supplemental Journal Article Materials • Karen Gutzman and Kimberly A. Tryka. • http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK159734/

  6. ORCID • ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated linkages between you and your professional activities ensuring that your work is recognized • http://orcid.org/ • JATS support started with v 1.0, <contrib-id>

  7. ORCID Workflow: Author Reviewer Manuscript submission Review request + + Author Database Reviewer Database AUTHOR RECORD REVIEWER RECORD Review process Notice to Reviewer DOI Accepted Paper Option to update ORCID record XML to CrossRef Published Paper Production Process Notice to Author

  8. PIE-J • Presentation and Identification of E-Journals (PIE-J) • NISO project • Develop a Recommended Practice to provide guidance on the presentation of e-journals, particularly in the areas of title presentation, accurate use of the ISSN, and citation practices • http://www.niso.org/workrooms/piej

  9. PIE-J Example

  10. JAV • Journal Article Version (JAV) • NISO Project • Developed a set of recommended terms to be applied to iterations of an article's lifecycle to allow for actionable, unambiguous and reliable tools for publishers, librarians, aggregators, and indexers • Current: Addendum for "proof" category • http://www.niso.org/workrooms/jav_addendum/

  11. CrossRef and JATS • CrossMark • CrossRef Metadata Services • FundRef • LicenseRef

  12. CrossMark • Corrections and retractions are growing • CrossMark is a standard method to indicate when scholarly materials are changed post-publication, including corrections, updates, errata, retractions and withdrawals • Latest news: standard vocabulary coming from CrossRef for correction type • http://www.crossref.org/crossmark/index.html

  13. CrossRef Metadata Services • CrossRef Metadata Services is a suite of tools for authorized partners to collect metadata on a cross-publisher basis to streamline their own crawling, indexing, and linking services. • JATS implications • CrossRef deposit schema now supports MathML • CrossRef deposit schema now supports JATS abstract model • http://www.crossref.org/cms/index.html

  14. FundRef • More organizations (funders, publishers) want to track funding • FundRef provides a standard way to report funding sources for published scholarly research. • http://www.crossref.org/fundref/index.html • http://www.crossref.org/fundref/fundref_registry.html • See also tools at http://labs.crossref.org/ • JATS implications • <institution-wrap> is a container element to hold both the name of an institution (<institution>) and any identifiers for that institution (<institution-id>), for example, an INSI or Ringgold ID • Can be used in aff or funding-source

  15. FundRef Workflow

  16. CrossRef Registry • This work was funded by an NIH cooperative agreement from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (grants U01HL077821, U01HL077826, U01HL077823). National Center for Research Resources (grant UL1RR025752), now at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, provided laboratory testing • This material was based on work supported by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, Rehabilitation Research and Development Service, grant F4096R to Milton V. Icenogle, MD, Cardiology Section, Veterans Integrated Service Network 18, Albuquerque, New Mexico. • This study was funded by Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) project grant 455209 • This work was supported by the German Israel Foundation under Grant No. 1–2038.1114.07, the Israel Science Foundation under Grant No. 1380021, the Deborah Foundation, the Poznanski Foundation, and MAFAT

  17. License Metadata Issues • Key issue: Machine-readable License metadata for automated content re-use • JATS-Con 2013/2014 paper • Inconsistent XML as a Barrier to Reuse of Open Access Content • http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK159964/

  18. LicenseRef

  19. Open Access Metadata and Indicators • Project to develop standardized bibliographic metadata and visual indicators to describe the accessibility of journal articles as well as potentially describe how "open" the item is. • http://www.niso.org/workrooms/oami/ • Key issue: Harmonize license and license and OA information • JATS Implications • <license> and <open-access> elements • Likely outcome: new best practices, but watch the NISO site for more information

  20. CHORUS • The Clearinghouse for the Open Research of the United States (CHORUS) is a not-for-profit public-private partnership to increase public access to peer-reviewed publications that report on federally funded research. • Provides a solution for agencies to comply with the OSTP memo on public access using public-private partnerships where possible and avoid extra-budgetary costs • Builds on publishers’ existing infrastructure; utilizes current and developing tools, resources and protocols for identification, discovery, access, preservation and compliance (such as CrossRef, FundRef and ORCID) • http://chorusaccess.org/

  21. CHORUS Metadata Integration

  22. Next Steps • Review: • Standards and metadata requirements • Workflow for best metadata integration path • Consider upgrade to JATS 1.1d1 • Implement revised metadata workflow • Include vital QA steps • Provide rich metadata to customers • CrossRef • PubMed or PMC • OA Funders • Other
