Definition • A plan of the Consellería de Cultura, Educación y Ordenación Universitaria that: • Embedded in the current situation of the Gallician education system • Develops a series of actions in the foreign language context • It aims at improving student and teachers’ foreign language competences • Adult Education and directives for life long learning are included

  3. General objective • The general objective of the Foreign Language Learning Plan is : • To allow students to become independent learners in a foreign language, with the necessary oral and expression competences when they finish their secondary education. • To provide teachers progressively with the didactic and lingustic competences to prepare students to acquire the previous competence skills.

  4. PGPLE: 3 focus points • Action plan with three main thematic focus: • 1: Schools • 2: Students • 3: Teachers

  5. 1: Schools • Transformation of bilingual sections in plurilingual schools • Set up of Plurilingual school network. • Language Assistants • Bilingual Sections • “Foreign Visiting” Teachers • Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas

Bilingual Sections • Bilingual teaching of a non linguistic subject or module in a foreign language and/or Gallician or Spanish. • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach • Implemented in Primary, Secondary and Vocational Training Education. • 649 Schools • 2.373 Bilingual Sections • 39.463 Students • 310 Teachers • Foreign languages delivered: German, French, English, Italian andPortuguese

Plurilingual Schools • Schools where non linguistic subjects of the Curricula are delivered in a foreign languageto all the students. • Primary and secondary Schools • Delivery: from only a subject to a third of the total school lesson timetable. • Currently in Galicia: • 148 Plurilingual schools • 10.008 Students • 224 Teachers

Escuelas oficiales de idiomas (EOI) • State schools for language learning • 11 EOI and 28 Sections • 11 languages: German, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, French, Gallician, English, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Russian. • More than 30.000 students • Modalities: • Oficial: face-to-face and distance learning (That’s English!) • Libre (private candidate): Certification examinations (nivel básico A2, nivel intermedio B1 y nivel avanzado B2), C1 • Other courses: CALC, CFR, private sectors, Celga, monográphic • 31 language assistants in English, French, German and Chinese

School support with native speakers • Assistant to CLIL teachers and foreign language teachers • Language Assistants in English, German, French, Chinese and Portuguese • 408 language Assistants in Gallician state schools in 2012-2013. • Essential piece in the students’ improvement of oral skills in the foreign language. • In Plurilingual schools, in EOI and in schools with Bilingial Sections.

CUALE Programme • Extra Language teaching • In Secondary and Vocational Schools • Students are preparted to EOI examinations. • Levels delivered : A1, A2, B1 y B2 • All school year after school • Free and non-compulsory activities. • Languages delivered: English and French • 28 schools • 1.331 students

Teacher in-service training Itineraries: PIALE Programme • For foreign language Specialist and non-specialist teachers • Course length: 1-4 weeks, according to modality. • 140 places: UK (45), Canada (65), Germany (5), France (25), Portugal (10) • 3 modalities: • Modality 1: immersion (3 phases) • Phase A: training course in Galicia (75 horas) • Phase B: immersion in UK,Canadá. (3 weeks) • Phase C: material design (25 hours) • Modality 2: integration (2 phases) • Integration (100 hours): school immersion Canadá • Material design (25 horas) • Modality 3: courses (2 phases) • Training (50 hours): in France, Germany or Portugal • Material design (25 horas)

CALC Courses • Cursos de Actualización Lingüística y Comunicativa • In-service training aiming at preparing teachers for language acreditation. • Specific preparation for Certificate exams in EOI • 120 horas per level • 3 levels: A2, B1 y B2 • Delivered in Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas • In-service attendance certificate at the end of the course • 2012-2013:63 courses • English: 53 courses • French: 10 courses
