Outline • Outline some of the principles of inclusive and engaging learning and teaching (ESRC WP project) • Illustrate these principles using video clips from authentic classroom practice (OER OMAC project) • Explore with colleagues how these principles and resources could be used to engage staff and students (Embedding project)

  3. Research questions • How do teachers academically engage all students within diverse groups? • How can we facilitate development of inclusive learning environments? • What are the implications for policy and practice in university teaching? Principles in practice • Create safe, inclusive spaces • Get to know students as individuals • Establish ground rules for collaborative learning • Harness students’ experience and knowledge • Start with what students know, then apply theory (biographical turn) • Connect with students’ lives and future aspirations • Facilitate uncertainty, confusion & difference • Encourage public articulation of thinking & problem solving • Teach reflexively and with sensitivity to differences • Mindful of impact of own beliefs and identity on student learning • Coordinate interaction, mixing different students (with a purpose) • Anticipate, prepare & respond flexibly to different and emerging requirements and interests Play video Play video Play video

  5. Teaching teachers to engage all students • 3 units • Content, activities, forum, assessment, links to other resources, etc. • Over 100 video clips in a range of subjects. All subtitled. • Module developed in Xerte for accessibility • Available via OU Labspace or via UoW website. • Down load and repurposing guide with video tutorial • Currently embedded in UoW Learning to Teach Inclusively Module www.wlv.ac.uk/LTImodule

  6. Discuss & feedback • In what ways is your teaching, or your colleagues’ teaching, engaging and inclusive? How do you know? • What changes could you make to your existing practice / CPD programmes to encourage engagement and improve retention of all students? • What role could the LTI module and video resources play in developing engaging and inclusive L&T in your institution?

  7. Embedding Project – engaging teachers • PG Cert in Academic Practice • CPD in L&T ‘bite size’ on line or blended • Transnational partner CPD – distance • Bespoke workshop programme • Equality & diversity training • Policy, strategy, action plans, how to guides, session plans, etc. • How can we help each other?

Laying the foundations for engagement and retention Craft & principles of engaging L&T Community of Artisan Teachers Safe space for reflection & development Voice to influence policy and practice, co-ordination & change If we can all become artisan teachers, we will retain and engage more students in learning that is relevant and meaningful to them.
