  1. Hair Treatment and Damage • People subject there hair to many types of substances and these can help in the comparisons of known and unknown hairs. • For example: • Cutting hair with a razor leaves angled tips. • Cutting hair with scissors leaves a straight tip. • Bleaches oxidize the hair and removes there color • And hair is also subjected to different types of diseases. • These conditions can have forensic value in hair comparisons because they are relatively unusual and they give the affected hairs a unique appearance

  2. Pictures Split Ends Angled Tips

  3. Comparison of Human Hairs Hair evidence is found in a great variety of crimes. Most commonly, it is evidence at scenes of crime and violence such as criminal sexual assault. In these types of crimes pubic hairs from the victim and the perpetrator will often be found on there body's where the attack took place Hair is easily transferable from one place to another and may go several transformations after being shed As with other types of evidence the collection of known samples is important, in majority's of cases either head or pubic hair are left as evidence so it is important to collect them as evidence to use it later on for the case

  4. What can be determined from the structure of Hair • A great deal can be determined from the structure of hair like: • Human or animal: It is easy to determine weather hair is human or animal especially head. Humans have fragmented or absent medullae whereas animals have continues medullae • Part of the body: For human hair, it is usual not difficult to determine what part of the body its from. Most crimes the hairs are either from the body or pubic hairs • Color: Hair that has been colored has more of a painted look than hair with a natural color. This natural color is due to the cluster of melanin, whereas dyed hair has a coating on the surface • Disease, Mistreatment: Diseased, teased or artificially straightened or curled hair can usually be detected under a microscope

  5. What can be determined from the structure of Hair • Age: age cannot be determined from the hair • Gender: at one time people thought that long hair was from female • Race: There are some racial characteristics of hair that show up if the person has fairly pure racial ancestry.
