Coronary artery bypass surgery, commonly called CABG is a surgical procedure which consists of diverting the internal mammary artery to the left anterior descending (LAD) branch of the left main coronary artery; or a harvested great saphenous vein of the leg, attaching the proximal end to the aorta or one of its major branches, and the distal end to immediately beyond a partially obstructed coronary artery. The purpose is to restore normal blood flow to that partially obstructed coronary artery.

Cabg procedure
CABG Procedure

  • Coronary bypass surgery uses a healthy blood vessel taken from the leg, arm, chest or abdomen and is grafted to the other arteries in the heart so that blood is bypassed around the diseased or blocked area.

  • Which grafts to use, depending on the location of the blockage, the amount of the blockage, and the size of the patient's coronary arteries.

  • More commonly, a segment of the internalmammaryartery is used for the graft, and the incisions are made in the chestwall.

  • The internal mammary arteries are most commonly used because they have shown the best long-term results.

  • Because they have their own oxygen-rich blood supply, the internal mammary arteries can usually be kept intact at their origin, and then sewn to the coronary artery below the site of blockage.

  • After a coronary bypass surgery, blood flow to the heart is improved. Coronary bypass surgery is just one option to treat heart disease.
