  2. “Cochlear Implant” • A Cochlear implant is an electronic device that can restore useful hearing and provide improved communication abilities for person who have severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss & who cannot benefit from hearing aids.

Functioning of Natural Hearing • Ear Canal: Sound moves through ear canal & strikes the eardrum. • Eardrum & Bones: Sound waves cause eardrum to vibrate the sounding bones in the middle ear into motion. • Inner Ear: The motion causes the fluid in the inner ear, to move the hair cells. • Hearing Nerve: Hair cells change the movement into electrical impulse which are sent to the hearing nerve in the brain enabling the person to hear.

How Cochlear Implant works • Sound Processor: External sound processor captures sound and converts it in digital signal. • Digital Signal: Processor sends digital signals to internal implant • Electrode Array: Internal implant converts signal into electrical energy sending it to electrode array inside the cochlea. • Hearing Nerve: Electrodes stimulate the hearing nerve bypassing non functioning hair cells. The brain perceives the signals as sound enabling the person to hear.
