  10. The use of “tÚ” and “usted” • The "usted" form marks some "social barrier" between speakers. • The "tú" form marks "social solidarity" between the speakers. Which one ultimately gets used depends on which of these factors ends up being stronger in the particular situation involved. • A social barrier could be a variety of things:- customer vs shopkeeper- landlord vs tenant- teacher vs student- high-ranking employee vs (much) lower-ranking employee- person in important position vs "normal citizen"- possibly even: lack of visual contact (speaking on telephone) or a physical barrier (tinted glass at the bank counter). • Social solidarity could be things like similar age or "social status", similar environment ("working in same company/department", "going to the same church", "both using Facebook"). • Choosing between tú and usted can also be a matter of:- personal preference (do I feel personally comfortable?)- institutional preference ("in this company, address managers 2 grades or more higher as "usted"). • Use also varies from country to country. In Mexico, for example, it's fairly common for "tú" to prevail in some situations (e.g. waiter-customer, student-teacher) where "usted" seems to prevail in Spain.

  26. Parador de alarcÓn The Parador of Alarcon (Castilla La Mancha) is a spectacular 8th Century Moorish castle, recently renovated in a bold style, combining history with modern design. The parador only has 15 rooms, and it is necessary to book in advance. The rooms are comfortable, especially the ones in the tower (which are a bit more expensive). The parador was recently refurbished. The result is spectacular - modern touches and furnishings and bright colours contrast with their historical surroundings, giving this parador a unique air.

  27. Parador de zafra The Parador de Zafra is in a majestic castle, on which construction was started in 1437 as the residence of the noble Spanish Dukes of Feria. It is in the centre of the lovely town of Zafra within easy walking distance of the old town. There are nine battlemented towers and a splendid courtyard and interior with coffered ceilings, large chests, ironwork, handrails and other decorative details belonging to the former palace.

  28. Hostal de los reyescatÓlicos (santiago de compostela) It was founded in 1499, and was used as lodgings for the pilgrims who had completed their long journey along the Way of Saint James and had finally reached their destination. This beautiful Gothic building has today been converted into a Parador hotel. One of the highlights is the beautiful Plateresque façade with its grilles which dates from the 16th century. Either side of the doorway there are two medallions bearing likenesses of the Catholic Monarchs. It has four interior courtyards. One of its most outstanding features is the lovely chapel of Enrique de Egas.
