  3. Topic Sentence The present National Hockey League lockout was brought about by General Managers overpaying for players.

Brainstorm three points. • Players have asked for long contracts that – at times – pay players more than they are worth. • General managers have handed out very long contracts and paid large prices for medium caliber players. • General managers are escalating player salaries in a battle to secure players.

  6. The present National Hockey League lockout was brought about by General Managers overpaying for players. Firstly, General Managers have handed out very long contracts. For example, the NY Islanders signed goalie Rick DiPietro for $67.5 million until 2021. Since signing DiPietro has been plagued with injuries and only played 42 games. Secondly, GMs have paid too much for mediocre players. For example, The Buffalo Sabres paid Ville Leino $6 million. He only scored 8 goals that year, and only scored 12 more the year before. Thirdly, GMs are escalating player salaries in a battle to secure players. For example, over the past few years we have seen several high priced and long term contracts that we didn’t see prior to 2005. These signings have caused other GMs to also pay more for players. In conclusion, the present lockout conditions were created by GMs paying huge money for long contracts.
