  2. Objectives • Identify the historical influences that helped shape today’s home designs • Recognize and describe the elements of contemporary dwellings • Discuss current trends in architecture

  3. Cape Colonial • Large rooms • Functional • Aesthetic Appeal • Cape Cod • Steep roof & little overhand • Central chimney accommodated necessary room fireplaces • Eave lines near top of windows ending with gable roofs

  4. Cape Colonial • Cape Ann • Large and chimney centrally located • Simple lines, sound construction, and colonial atmosphere • Gambrel Roof: extra headroom

  5. Garrison • Separate corner posts on each floor to use shorter and stronger posts.

  6. Salt Box • Like roofline slopes gently from ridge to eaves • From shape or coffee, tea or salt boxes found in colonial stores • Designed for New England winters

  7. Southern Colonial • Style of warmth, quaintness, and hospitality of the old south. • Expresses mood of elegance and traditional charm • Massive with upper and lower balconies, 3 story chimney for bedroom fireplaces, ornate woodwork and iron trim

  9. Ranch Design • From southwestern part of the country • Low pitched roof with gables and overhanging eaves
