  4. The EPIKH goals • Strategic aims: • Reinforce the impact of e-Infrastructures in scientific research defining and delivering stimulating programme of educational events, including Grid Schools and High Performance Computing courses; • Broaden the engagement in e-Science activities and collaborations both geographically and across disciplines. • Specific actions: • Spreading the knowledge about the “Grid Paradigm” to all potential users: both system administrators and application developers through an extensive training programme; • Easing the access of the trained people to the e-Infrastructures existing in the areas of action of the project; • Fostering the establishment of scientific collaborations among the countries/continents involved in the project. 13. EPIKH summary and conclusions • EPIKH represents for young brilliant scientists and technologists a unique occasion to learn and adopt the Grid paradigm through stimulating research programmes; • EPIKH can offer free technical support for anyone willing to organize local training events on Grid computing: • It can be undergraduate courses, M.Sc. courses, Ph.D. curricula, tutorials, Grid Schools, etc.; • Thanks to EPIKH, large projects → NGIs → campuses can easily setup Grid infrastructures and deploy on them scientific applications; • EPIKH is indeed complementing the training activities of several EU projects ensuring coherence of action and increasing impact. Incontro con i referee del Progetto INFN Grid - Bologna, 12.10.2010

  14. EPIKH is a FP7 success story in Africa Incontro con i referee del Progetto INFN Grid - Bologna, 12.10.2010

  15. GISELA reference FP7 INFRA-2010-2 call - Topic INFRA-2010-1.2.3: Virtual Research Communities Start date: 01/09/2010 - Duration: 24 months EC requested contribution: 0.85 M€ Project type: CP-CSA Grant agreement No: 261487 Project Coordinator: Bernard M. 16. GISELA Countries & Partners 15 Countries (11 in Latin America) 19 Partners (14 in Latin America) Incontro con i referee del Progetto INFN Grid - Bologna, 12.10.2010 27

  17. GISELA Objectives and Goals Ensure the long- term sustainability of the e-Infrastructure in the Latin American continent Provide full support to the Virtual Research Communities spanning Latin America and Europe, using the e-Infrastructure. Focus on two inter-related goals: • Implement a sustainability model rooted on National Grid Initiatives (NGI), in association with CLARA, NRENs and collaborating with EGI. • Provide the communities with the suited e-Infrastructure and Application-related Services required to improve the effectiveness of their research. This will address both: • The current EELA-2 User Communitieswhose research investigations are carried out at the Institution level or in small collaborations. • The larger Virtual Research Communitiesas Life & Earth Sciences, HEP Incontro con i referee del Progetto INFN Grid - Bologna, 12.10.2010 28

  18. INFN Activities in GISELA • WP3 – USER COMMUNITIES SUPPORT • WP3 supports VRCs by fostering collaboration among multidisciplinary groups, creates and maintains support tools to ease the utilisation of the e-Infrastructure, organises training activities tailored to each VRC needs and validates the services provided by WP4, WP5 and WP6 for future users. • WP6 – INFRASTRUCTURE AND APPLICATION-ORIENTED SERVICES FOR USER COMMUNITIES • The objective of WP6 is to enhance the grid experience of both users and system administrators by providing them with a portfolio of application-related and infrastructure-related Grid Services and the appropriate support to allow them to use these services adequately. • The portfolio of services is mainly formed by the services developed in the context of the EELA-2 project and new services to be developed in the context of GISELA. The latter may be general-purpose services catering to the needs of many different e-Science applications, as well as customised services that target particular VRCs.
