  3. College of Education Conceptual Framework Mission Statement Our mission is to teach, to serve, and to engage in scholarship. We teach our students to be critical thinkers and lifelong learners. We prepare professionals who improve student learning, promote diversity, make informed decisions, engage in collaborative endeavors, maintain professional and ethical standards, and become change agents in their workplaces. We engage in scholarly work that informs the profession and we serve the education community by providing applied scholarship.

Residency Requirements • 75% of all prerequisite and credential coursework must be completed at Cal State Fullerton. • If you have taken a course at another University or College that you feel is equivalent to one of the courses in our program, you MUST fill out an equivalency petition before you can be admitted. -Typically, equivalency will be granted only for prerequisite courses - The SPED Equivalency Petition may be found at http://ed.fullerton.edu/sped /courseequivpet.htm -Equivalency Petitions are submitted to the Chair of Special Education, Dr. Melinda Pierson. Only the Chair of Special Education may approve equivalency petitions.

Intern Program • The purpose is to allow teachers in high-need subject areas to begin teaching • right away • while earning a credential • with extensive support • Intern Program requirements • For a candidate to be eligible for an internship, all requirements on the Intern Readiness Form must be fully completed. The form is found on our department website. • You must also have a job offer with start date from a district with which we have a MOU.

  13. Autism Authorization All candidates who began the Education Specialist Program in the Fall of 2010 have the autism content embedded; thus, the Autism Authorization is not required. However, anyone who received their Education Specialist Credential in Mild/Moderate prior to Fall 2010 AND who currently works with or is interested in working with children with Autism must complete an Added Authorization.  At CSU Fullerton the Added Authorization consists of the following four classes (3 units each): • SPED 401 Introduction to Autism • SPED 502 Teaching Strategies for Students with ASD • SPED 522 Positive Behavior Support • SPED 533 Collaboration

APLE Loans: Who is Eligible? • The APLE program will assume educational loans that were incurred to meet the costs associated with obtaining a baccalaureate degree or an initial teaching credential through (a) one or more of the primary federal student loan programs or (b) institutional educational loans. • You may apply if you… • are approved to receive or have received an educational loan(s). • not in default on any educational loans. • agree to teach in a CA public school in one of the areas listed on the upcoming slide for up to four consecutive years. • are a legal resident of CA. • have completed 60 semester units (90 quarter units). • are in a program leading to BA or in teacher prep program.

How much will APLE pay? • Up to $19,000 in outstanding educational loan balances as follows: • Up to $2,000 after first full school year of eligible full-time teaching • Up to $3,000 after second full year of eligible full-time teaching • Up to $3,000 after third full school year of eligible full-time teaching • Up to $3,000 after fourth full school year of eligible full-time teaching • APLE participants who teach in mathematics, science, or special education may receive both the basic $11,000 and up to $1,000 of additional loan assumption during each of four years. • Another $1,000 of benefits may be received in each of the four years by individuals teaching mathematics, science or special education in a school ranked in the lowest 20 percentile of the State’s API.

Eligible Content Areas and/or Schools To be eligible to participate in the APLE program, an individual is required to teach in any one of the following: • A designated teacher shortage field, which includes any of the following: • Mathematics • Science • English and Language Arts • Foreign Language • Special Education • Schools serving a large population of students from low-income families, • Low-performing schools, defined as those in the bottom 50 percentile of the Academic Performance Index (API), • Schools having a high percentage of teachers holding emergency permits, • Schools serving rural areas, • State Special Schools

Your Success is Your Responsibility • Be sure to submit all documentation! • Make sure you have submitted transcripts for ALL universities attended for both the University and the Program applications; complete your file!!!! • Make sure you submit examination scores as soon as you receive them. Have them sent to you not the university. • Keep copies of all documentation for your own files. • We do not provide copies. • Plan to attend Preorientation and Orientation Meetings • Dates will be posted on the website! • Stay on track by: • Following your Credential Program Requirement Plan! • Reviewing the Education Specialist Credential Program Handbook before each semester begins. • Communicating with your Program Coordinator if you have any questions.
