  9. YWCA IN GREECE • …was founded in 1923 by women refugees from Asia Minor.

OUR HISTORY IN GREECE • Founding of the first Social Work School in Greece • Founding of the first School for Librarians in Greece • Founding of two social services Units providing shelter for elderly people in Athens and school students in Crete. • Training for women in agricultural areas, maintaining traditional arts and crafts • Support and information to Greek women wanting to emigrate (language courses, information on work permits, etc)

Use of Life long learning principles for adults in all training activities • Creation of a nation wide network of Libraries for children • Introduction of IT technologies • Work in cooperation with the European network of Vocational training IRIS for women • Vocational trainings for women (care for the elderly and children)

The fundamental issue was always the development of women and the advocacy on their fundamental human rights. • Developing further its counseling and supportive services, YWCA strove to intervene for the protection of the right of women to employment and specifically supporting women who are long term unemployed.
