  2. Introduction • In this presentation we are going to look at meta-fiction and the breaking of the 4th wall in video games.

  3. What is the 4th Wall? In video games, breaking the fourth wall occurs when a game becomes aware of it is game-nature or when a character directly acknowledges you, the player*. *http://www.giantbomb.com/breaking-the-fourth-wall/92-138/

  4. What is Metafiction? • Meta-fiction, also known as Romantic irony in the context of Romantic works of literature, is a type of fiction that self-consciously addresses the devices of fiction, exposing the fictional illusion.

  5. What is the Difference? • In Meta fiction the character will allude to either literary or other conventions used in the relevant media, without out right stating a question to the audience. • When the 4th wall is broken the character will outright address the audience with no pretence of staying in setting, detracting from the audience immersion.

  6. Examples of breaking the 4th wall

  7. Examples of Meta fiction

  8. Games incorporating Meta fiction or breaking the 4th wall Vampire the masquerade Portal Arkham asylum – Scarecrow, Riddler Fallout Series Monkey island Conkers bad Furday Max Payne MGS – psycho mantis

  9. Our favourite example Our favourite example of breaking the forth wall is Dead pool from the marvel comic books, he was the first comic book character to be consciously aware of his status as a fictional character and as such regularly talks to the viewers and artists.
