2. Use COMPATIBLE NUMBERS to estimate: COMPATIBLE NUMBERS are like peanut butter and jelly… They go together! Ex: 5 and 200 go together because when you divide 5 into 200 you get a nice, neat number ending in 0 Ex: 5 and 231 are not compatible because when you divide 5 into 231 it’s messy with a remainder left over.

3. The problem: 159  7 STEP 1: list the multiples of the divisor. In this case, the divisor is 7 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70

4. Step 2: Find the closest number without going over! 15 15 rests between 14 and 21 on the number line. Pick the number closest to 15 without going over. 14 , 21 , 28 , 35 , 42 , 49 , 56 , 63 , 70 14 So, the most compatible number would be ______.

5. Step 3: Add zero or zeros to the multiple to divide 159 now becomes 140 So, now the compatible numbers are 7 and 140.

6. So, now we’re ready to divide! 7 /140 20 The estimated quotient is 20! -140 0
