  1. Diboson Production at the Tevatron Rencontres de Moriond March 6 - 13, 2010 Electroweak Interactions and Unified Theories La Thuile, Italy Ia Iashvili For CDF and DØ Collaboration

  2. Outline+ • Introduction • W production • Radiation Amplitude Zero • WW production • Cross section measurement • Triple Gauge Boson Couplings • WZ production • Cross section measurement • Triple Gauge Boson Couplings • Semi-hadronic WZ/WW/ZZ decays • Z production • Cross section measurement • Triple Gauge Boson Couplings • ZZ production • First observation • Cross section measurement • Summary

  3. Introduction+ • Tevatron diboson program: measure production cross sections, study kinematics and probe gauge boson self-interactions. • Diboson production is one of the least tested areas of the SM. • Triple gauge vertices are sensitive to physics beyond the SM. • Tevatron complementary to LEP: explores higher energies and different combinations of couplings. • In the SM, diboson productions are important to understand: they shares many characteristics and present backgrounds to Higgs and SUSY.

  4. Introduction+ • Excursions from the SM can be described via effective Lagrangian: where V = Z, In SM: • Anomalous Triple Gauge Coupling’s (TGC) increase production cross sections, particularly at high values of the boson ET (W / Z / ). • Unitarity violation avoided by introducing a form-factor scaleΛ, modifying the anomalous coupling at high energy: • Two types of effective Lagrangians with: • on-shell Z on-shell ZZ • (ZZ*,Z*) (ZZZ*,ZZ*) • (CP violating) • (CP conserving) • SM predicts all to be 0

  5. W → l analysis at DØ+ • Three main diagrams for W production at the Tevatron: Final State Radiation Initial State Radiation WW Vertex • Zero amplitude at • cos* =+1/3 for u dbar W+  • cos* = -1/3 for d ubar W-  • No measurement of pz of : use Ql× (η -ηl)to observe “dip” in the distribution • Non-SM coupling may fill the “dip” Photons radiated from quark and W lines interfere destructively. PRL 100, 241805, 2008 “No dip” hypothesis ruled out at 2.6  level constitutes first indication for radiation-amplitude zero in W.

  6. WW→ll production+ Sensitive to WWZ / WW couplings • Dilepton channel provides cleanest signature: ee,  or e and missing ET • Signature similar to H→WW→ll production • Main background processes: W+j/, dijet, Drell-Yan, top pairs, WZ, ZZ • Theory prediction for production cross section is 12.0-13.5 pb: accessible at Tevatron Run II already with a O(100) pb-1. • PRL 103, 191801, 2009 • Cross section measurements • DØ (Lint= 1 fb-1) CDF (Lint=3.6 fb-1)arXiv:0912.4500

  7. WW→ll production: probing WWZ and WWγ couplings+ • Use pT spectra of leptons to probe WWZ and WW couplings: • Non-SM TGC enhances cross-section at high-pT. • Study various scenarios for WWZ and WW coupling relations, and different values ofΛ. • 95 % C.L. limits on TGC’s (Λ= 2 TeV): • Assuming equal couplings: CDF Lint=3.6 fb-1 arXiv:0912.4500 κZ = κγ, g1Z = g1γ = 1, and λγ = λZ DØ -0.12 < Δκ < 0.35 -0.14 < λ < 0.18 • Respecting SU(2)L×U(1)Y symmetry: ΔκZ = Δg1Z – Δκγ tan2θW and λγ = λZ DØ -0.54 < Δκγ < 0.83 -0.14 < λ < 0.18 -0.14 < Δg1Z < 0.30 CDF -0.57 < Δκγ < 0.65 -0.14 < λ < 0.15 -0.22 < Δg1Z < 0.30

  8. Cleanest Signal Mode WZ → lll production+ • Sensitive to WWZ coupling only (WW is sensitive to both WWZ and WW). • WZ production is unavailable at e+e- colliders. • Search for WZ production in 3 leptons (eee,ee, e, ) + missing ET • Distinct, but rare signature: • (ppbarWZ) = 3.7  0.3 pb • Branching fraction ~1.5% • Background processes: Z+jet(s), ZZ, Z, ttbar production
