Project Description • Provide support for an annual JMH internship program which serves ethnically diverse, underserved students • Interns are placed in various departments • Many of those departments also sponsor externships at allied health schools • Grant guidelines: • Qualified and diverse non-nursing allied health professionals • Improve regional allied health workforce diversity

Project Description • Fall Semester • Science curriculum • Career exploration, speakers, interviews, professionalism workshop, resumes, business cards • Spring Semester • Science curriculum • Two eight-week internship rotations Jan 2010 Dec 2010 2009-2010 school year internships 2010-2011 school year career exploration
Project Description • Non-nursing allied health professionals - Placements
Project Description • New scrubs were purchased /provided • Portfolios • College preparation workshop • Educational goals, time management, applying, personal essay, budgeting, selecting the school, financial aid • Internships, speakers • Interns gave final presentations to their fellow students, sharing the knowledge of careers they learned about in their internships • Supported department mentors • Supported internship coordinator • Marketing materials for youth
Objectives • Up to 60 ethnically diverse students will be influenced • Increased awareness of allied health careers • Increase in sense of preparedness for college • Increase in perceived competence in job skills
Successes • Increase awareness of allied health career in ethnically diverse, underserved students • Yes 96% • “Influenced what you are planning to do after HS?” • Yes, 88%
Successes • Increase in sense of preparedness for college • Yes 86% • Know the world a little better because of Beth • Better aware of the cost • Know more about planning. • It is much better knowing than not knowing • Scholarship sources, financial aid • The application process (more confident) • Finances, money management, budget • Keep control of bills and savings • The college setting • Resources to help reach my goal
Successes College Preparation Workshop
Successes • Increase in sense of preparedness for college • Lower in second class (2010-2011), compared to first class (2009-2010) • First group: presentation in April, already applied to colleges, had received FAFSA results, reality was imminent • Second group: presentation in October (2010), had not started college application process
Successes • Increase in perceived competence in job skills • Work Ready Essential Skills tool created by East County Business–Education Alliance
Successes • Because of internship experiences, realized they were not as expert as they initially thought • “Simply answering the questionnaire raised awareness of these skills and their importance in the workplace”
Successes • Unexpected closer relationship between JMH and students • More presence of JMH Coordinator in classroom • Self esteem from new scrubs – students were proud
Successes Summary • Increase awareness of allied health career in ethnically diverse, underserved students • Influenced their post-HS path • Increase in sense of preparedness for college • Increase in perceived competence in job skills • More students “Awesome” and fewer “Need help” • Enhanced link to JMH • Enhanced self esteem in job situation and in school • Marketing Materials • ** Academy for 2011-2012 ** *East County Business–Education Alliance

Challenges • Desire to extend the coverage of grant to end of second internship, to obtain more outcomes • Few students did not complete required assignments to earn internship • Did participate in other opportunities • Professionalism workshop • College prep workshop • Received a portfolio • Speakers • Marketing materials
Replication • Will definitely continue this internship / partnership annually • Able to incorporate information from College Preparation Workshop • Can use as model for other schools • Scrubs will be used for many years to come! • Can continue to track changes in self assessment of essential job skills
