  1. Currency Notes of India From 18th Century to 2019

  2. History of Indian notes dates back to the 18th century when private banks as well as semi-government banks like Bank of Hindostan (1770-1832), the General Bank in Bengal and Bahar (1773-75, the Bengal Bank (1784-91) etc. issued notes for three presidencies namely Bombay, Madras and Bengal. Old notes of India issued for Bengal Presidency featured designs only on one side and are known as uniface notes. A personified figure of Commerce was featured on these notes later on and designs were printed on both sides of the note.

  3. Indian notes were issued directly by the British Government after the Currency Act of 1861 was tabled. These notes are called as British India notes and they featured a portrait of Queen Victoria on one side, while the other side was left blank initially. Notes of India from the Underprint series were issued in 1867. 5, 10, 50 and 100 rupees were allowed to be used outside the circle of issue between 1903 and 1911.

  4. Only one princely state issued currency notes in India and that is Hyderabad. These notes featured intricate designs and Persian legends. They were issued in various denominations such as 5, 10, 50, 100 and 1000 rupees. Some of the rare notes of India issued by the three presidencies, British Government and Hyderabad princely states are in great demand and are auctioned for impressive amounts.

  5. Apart from Britain, other European powers such as Portuguese and France also issued currency notes in India. The Portuguese notes bore denominations such as Rupias, Tangas and Escudos while the French notes bore denominations such as Roupies. After Independence, the Government of India issues 1 rupee notes while notes of other denominations are issued by the Reserve Bank of India. Extant notes were circulated from 1947 to 1949 and the very first 1 Rupee notes of India were issued in the year 1949 by the Government.

  6. The latest Currency Notes of India that have been issued over the last three years feature historical places such as Red Fort on the new 500 Rs note, RaniKiVav on the new 100 Rs note, Hampi Chariot on the new 50 rupees note and SanchiStupa on the new 10 rupees note.
