Ancient Indian coins can be broadly categorised into 6 sections namely: Janapada coins, Old Indian coins issued by Indian empires, coins issued by Ancient and early medieval kingdoms, Ancient coins of South India, coins of Ancient invaders and Indian old coins issued by ancient city states of India. • The Indian subcontinent was split into 22 Janapadas during the ancient period. Each janapada issued very interesting ancient Indian coins.

  3. Then came the powerful Indian kingdoms like Gupta Empire, Satavahana, Western Kshatraps, Kalachuri of Tripuri etc. • Historical coins of India from the Gupta Era are sought after all over the world because of their fabulous and detailed designs.
