    3. Continuity Planning Goal No Matter what happens today, we want to be able to do tomorrow what we were doing yesterday.

    4. Why BCP? No cost for the tool Minimal costs for server, etc. Tool is tailored to Higher Ed Ease of use Not disaster specific – All disasters produce the same effect: a diminishment of essential resources: your space, your equipment, your data, your staff, etc.

    5. Getting Started Develop Action Plan Server needed? Software – Cold Fusion & SQL Application changes, modify code, make University specific System and User Acceptance testing Develop Training and Documentation Determine Training Schedule

    6. Getting Started (cont) Document Assumptions Infrastructure guidance: Get depts. that provide major services to create brief “guidance documents” advising what can be expected post disaster (e.g. from payroll, HR, Purchasing, Bursar, IT, etc. Frequently asked questions Some examples are:

    7. FAQ Examples Who should do business continuity planning? Should we appoint a coordinator? Who should be in the planning group? How long should it take? How detailed and complete does plan need to be? What is difference between function and process?

    8. What does the Continuity plan contain? Critical functions: identify and describe “Plan B” for each of these functions Information that will aid dept. during crisis: Lists, documents and records Action Items to increase readiness Let’s look at the BCP tool

    9. Roll-Out Strategies Utilize Champions Begin with low hanging fruit Begin with units allied with your unit No Cold calling Let depts. know there is no need to prepare – just answer the questions on the screen.

Roll-out Issues Success factors for coordinators Knowledge of dept. – issues they face, their processes and critical functions Dept. staff are overloaded – tool makes it easy Don’t try for perfection – the perfect is the enemy of good – “Analysis Paralysis” Don’t think mega-disaster – think moderate-scale event Plan needs to be a continuing process not a project
