Introduction: What We Need to Solve • What war took place in the tropics in 1898? • What were the living conditions of soldiers in the Spanish-American War? • What illness or disease could cause nausea, dizziness, and stomach pains? • What was causing the soldiers to fall ill when they had a good diet?

  3. Clue #1 • The Tropics 1898 Which war? • The Spanish-American War. • What is the theater of war? • Cuba, Guam, Philippine Island, and Puerto Rico.

  4. Clue #1 • What Technology was being employed? • Warfare: the warfare mainly used during the Spanish-American War was Guerilla Warfare due to the terrain. The weapons used during this time the colt navy revolver to the Gatling Gun.

  5. Clue #1 • Medical: Radiographs were introduced to military service of the United States during the war; the radiographs revolutionized the diagnosis of war injuries.

  6. Clue #2 Question: What were the living conditions of soldiers in the Spanish-American War? Due to the tropical climate, the soldiers were prone to yellow fever, malaria, and dysentery. Camps were also over crowded and were filthy, which caused typhoid to break out. Food wasn’t preserved well either, so it contracted bacteria easily, which could lead to poisoning.

Clue #4 • At the end of 1899 soldiers were falling ill because the meat that came in the cans was spoiled and wasn’t fighting off the bacteria it was supposed to, so the soldiers were falling ill. • Their chances of survival could have been improved by giving them a much healthier diet based on vegetables and not eat the meat that was spoiled.
