  2. Structure • 5 act play with a time span of 1-2 days • Follows the traditional structure – exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution. • Genre – comedy

  3. Setting • Messina – think about the significance of the setting.

  4. Title of the Play • What is the significance of the title? • The title of the play is a pun • Word play on “nothing” – ‘noting’ – one of the key themes of the play • The false conversations, eavesdropping, misunderstandings that occur as a result. • Links to the theme of deception – find egs

  5. Puns and word play • Think about the language that’s used especially between Beatrice and Benedick (act 1 sc 1). • What does it say about the characters? • Dogberry and misuse of language (malapropisms) – causes confusion and adds to the comedy of the play

  6. Imagery • Imagery that is used – taming “taming my wild heart to thy loving hand” (act 3 sc 1) • “in time the savage bull doth bear the yoke” (act 1 sc 1) • this imagery is connected to Beatrice and Benedick. • Imagery of war – “they never met but there is a skirmish of wit between them” (act 1 sc 1) • What does this suggest about the characters.

  7. Characterisation • Look at the development of the characters. • Think about the contrasts between the two sets of lovers – Claudio/Hero & Beatrice/Benedick – what does the audience learn about love? Self discovery? Deception? • Changes in characters – Benedick & Beatrice – look at the changes in their language – link to self discovery. • The purpose of Dogberry and the Watch? • Good guys/bad guys? – purpose of Don John?
