STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  7. Business Math is a flexible format course offered in the Business Skills Center (BSC), in Room 1436 at the main Napa Valley College campus. Although you will be working independently on your chapters each week, the BSC staff is here to assist you when necessary. To stay on schedule it is recommended that you attend class for a minimum of three (3) hours weekly. The course content will be delivered through several delivery methods: • Textbook Readings • Connect/Learn Smart online software • Electronic, Voiced-over PowerPoint Chapter Presentations • PowerPoint Chapter Presentations without Sound Delivery Methods:

  8. To achieve the course objectives, you will use the textbook. Your grade will be based upon the completion of all tests. Assessments:

  9. You will be working independently on your chapters each week. We will be here to assist you when you have questions. Flexible Scheduling:

  10. Your grade will be based upon the completion of the chapter tests that apply the knowledge of comprehensive business mathematics skills. All chapter tests for each part must be completed to earn 1 unit. These tests will account for 100% of your grade. All test scores will be averaged to determine your semester grade. Once you have completed all of the tests for your unit, you may choose to retake one chapter test to better your grade. The retake test is not the same test as the original but will be similar to the original test. The original test score will be changed to the new test score. Keep in mind—your new test score will take the place of the original score, even if the retake score is lower the retake score will be used to calculate your grade. So, be sure to study. The following grading scale will be used to establish the semester grade: % Grade 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D 0-59 F EVALUATION & GRADING STANDARDS

  11. Chapter Tests When you are ready to test, take your folder, note card, and calculator to the staff desk. Cellular telephones and their calculators may not be used during the test. Notify the staff person that you are ready to test. You may use a 3” x 5” index card “cheat sheet” during the test. The card can contain any notes you wish to have with you during the test. You may use only one side of the card and the notes are to be handwritten. No computer-printed, photocopied, or “reduced” information will be allowed. Your card will be checked before you take the test and it will be turned in with your test. The Chapter Organizer and Study Guide at the back of each chapter is a good resource tool to compile notes for your index card. Prepare to spend at least an hour to take each test. The tests are not timed, you can take as much time as you wish to finish the test; so allow enough time to not feel rushed and to be able to “double-check” your answers. Once you begin a test, it must be finished before you leave (or we close). If for some reason you must leave before your test is completed, the test will be graded and any unanswered questions will be marked incorrect. When you are finished, bring your test, scratch paper (whether blank or not), and note card to a staff person. Make sure your name is checked off the testing log. Your test score will be recorded in your folder. If you would like to review the graded test, you may review it with the instructor. Portable music players, cellular telephones, or text message devices are not allowed during testing. Testing Procedures

  12. Read and work chapter problems in your textbook Complete chapter test Work in the Textbook A textbook is required for this class. You may either purchase a paper copy or an e-book. You are required to read the assigned chapters, study the examples, and do the End-of-ChapterDrill and Word Problems. Answers to the odd problems are shown in Appendix C. You are not required to complete the Challenge Problems. As a final review, complete the Summary Practice Test at the end of each chapter. Work in Connect/Learn Smart Connect is an online component of learning Business Math. This component is not required but will be a big help in your being successful. If you purchase the book through the Napa Valley College, Barnes and Noble bookstore, you will receive an access code with the book. The website is connect.mheducation.com. All assigned chapters and problems are on the site for additional practice. Lesson Procedures

  13. For additional practice, you may go to the textbook Website at http://www.mhhe.com/slater11e Please make every effort to stay on schedule. This class is very difficult to “catch up.” Follow the “Are you on Schedule” to ensure that you stay on track each week. You should plan to spend a minimum of 3 hours each week per unit preparing for this class. You will not be tested on Chapters 1, 2, or 3. However, you should review those concepts before you begin the course. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
