  1. Do Now: Talk with your partner and come up with a definition/explanation of:1. Evidence2. Analysis Points to think about: How are they different? What might you include in each?

  2. What will the next exam consist of? Let’s look over the assignment sheet. Now’s the time to ask questions and pay attention!

  3. What is meant by evidence? • SPECIFIC pieces of information that back up/support the CLAIM you made in your topic sentence • In other words, your evidence shouldn’t be talking about something random! • Later, you can use quotes as evidence but there is a right way and wrong way to do this…to be continued….

  4. An Example of Strong/Weak Evidence • Sample 1: • Thesis: Early Urban centers like CatalHuyuk differed from mainstream Neolithic agricultural villages due to the fact that CatalHuyuk had a more substantial population, there was a more complex religion, and there was evidence of a simple military system; these differences are what allowed urban centers like CatalHuyuk eventually develop into more complex civilizaotins. • Topic sentence: CatalHuyuk differed from mainstream Neolithic villages because they had a simple military system, but Neolithic villages did not. • Evidence: For example, no evidence exists that suggests Neolithic villages constructed or organized defensive systems. However, in CatalHuyuk there exists evidence of walls that surround the city. In addition, all the homes were connected, thus no roads existed, in order to prevent invaders from penetrating the city.

  5. An Example of Strong/Weak Evidence • Sample 2: • Thesis: Early Urban centers like CatalHuyuk differed from mainstream Neolithic agricultural villages due to the fact that CatalHuyuk had a more substantial population, there was a more complex religion, and there was evidence of a simple military system; these differences are what allowed urban centers like CatalHuyuk eventually develop into more complex civilizaotins. • Topic sentence: CatalHuyuk differed from mainstream Neolithic villages because they had a simple military system, but Neolithic villages did not. • Evidence: For example, a military system would include having walls or a standing army. Neolithic villages did not have this.

  6. What is meant by analysis? • After you provide evidence that proves your topic sentence correct, you need to talk about why this evidence/argument is important! • How did “x” impact the people back then? (did gov’t change? Society? Advancements? Promote peace or unity or war, or trade?) • Analysis = your interpretation • The answer won’t be in “black and white” somewhere. You need to think about the connections/impact with your own brain!

  7. Let’s use our brain and go back to the last example of evidence…. What would be some good analysis to put here?

  8. Sample 1: • Thesis: Early Urban centers like CatalHuyuk differed from mainstream Neolithic agricultural villages due to the fact that CatalHuyuk had a more substantial population, there was a more complex religion, and there was evidence of a simple military system; these differences are what allowed urban centers like CatalHuyuk eventually develop into more complex civilizaotins. • Topic sentence: CatalHuyuk differed from mainstream Neolithic villages because they had a simple military system, but Neolithic villages did not. • Evidence: For example, no evidence exists that suggests Neolithic villages constructed or organized defensive systems. Analysis??

  9. However, in CatalHuyuk there exists evidence of walls that surround the city. In addition, all the homes were connected, thus no roads existed, in order to prevent invaders from penetrating the city. • Analysis: As a result of having strong defensive walls that kept invaders out, the people were able to develop a unique culture in which they had their own religion, and views on social class. This helped to keep the people of this urban center unified.

  10. Sample 2: • Thesis: Early Urban centers like CatalHuyuk differed from mainstream Neolithic agricultural villages due to the fact that CatalHuyuk had a more substantial population, there was a more complex religion, and there was evidence of a simple military system; these differences are what allowed urban centers like CatalHuyuk eventually develop into more complex civilizaotins. • Topic sentence: CatalHuyuk differed from mainstream Neolithic villages because they had a simple military system, but Neolithic villages did not. • Evidence: For example, no evidence exists that suggests Neolithic villages constructed or organized defensive systems. 11. Writing Tips (examples) • What is not evidence? • “Governments that used Legalist and Confucist ideas were successful. For example, the Qin Dynasty, which followed Legalism, was successful.“ • What is not analysis? • No more saying: “This shows…” “This was due to…” • Hinduism and Buddhism each promoted the idea of nonviolence. This shows the society was peaceful. • Sentences I never want to see you write: • Legalism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Hinudism, etc ARE NOT PEOPLE. Therefore, don’t word sentences like: “Hinduism and Buddhism believed that…” “Legalism didn’t like the people.” • “Throughout history,” “ Since the dawn of man,” “A long time ago” • Hinduism and Buddhism were similar and different in many ways

  12. How are my paragraphs supposed to be organized? • Topic sentence (your claiming something!) • For example…. • In addition… • As a result…. (Consequently, etc) • Concluding sentence
