  2. Introduction • Proper vocabulary is utterly important in the study of semantic Web. • Grasping correct terminology is part of proper learning process. • Knowing the history and evolution of the subject area helps in placing current developments into proper perspective. • Acquaintance with the parties involved in SemWeb developments allows us selection of partners in the future. • Understanding the subject is eased through a proper model mimicking the mechanics of interaction and hierarchy of components in effecting semantic Web. CmpE 583 Fall 2008

  3. Agenda • Semantic Web terminology • Parties involved in semantic Web arena • Evolution of semantic Web thechnology • Components thereof. CmpE 583 Fall 2008

  4. WWW GRID RDF XML URI OWL RSS WS Rule Terminology • Semantic Web: • See Introduction to “Web Semantics” in Intro Presentation. • A common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries based on RDF [W3C-2004]. • Webster’s Online Dictionary: serves Wikipedia content! • On Wikipedia • RDF: Resource Description Framework: • RDF integrates a variety of applications using XML for syntax and URIs for naming. • The RDF specifications provide a lightweight ontology system to support the exchange of knowledge on the Web. • See W3C RDF Site. CmpE 583 Fall 2008

  5. Terminology(continued) • XML- Extensible Markup Language is a simple, very flexible text format derived from SGML (ISO 8879). • URI- Uniform Resource Identifier (URI aka URL) are short strings that identify resources in the web. • Ontology: Webster's Online Dictionary. • By Tom Gruber: What is an ontology? • OWL- Web Ontology Language: uses URI for naming and the framework provided by RDF. • OWL suit of Specifications were announced on 10 Feb 2004. • OWL 2 drafts are published on 10 October 2008. Public comments are expected by 23 October 2008. CmpE 583 Fall 2008

  6. Parties • W3C- World Wide Web Consortium. • DARPA- Defence Advanced Reseach Project Agency (US Government). • Semantic Web Services Initiative (SWSI). • SemanticWeb.org is a community portal. • Ontolog community: • ONTOLOG - collaborative work environment • Open, International, Virtual Community of Practice on Ontologies • OGF- Open Grid Forum: the merger of the Global Grid Forum (GGF) and the Enterprise Grid Alliance (EGA). • Semantic Web Science Association (SWSA) • For detail on above, check Parties at Terminology Page. • Elsevier Journal of Web Semantics: Started just over a year ago. • Many private enterprises and research groups are also involved. See Organizations tab at SWWG site. CmpE 583 Fall 2008

  7. History • Dan Brickley: Semantic Web History: Nodes and Arcs 1989-1999 The WWW Proposal and RDF, updated 2001. • W3C Metadata Activity. • Tim Berners-Lee: The World Wide Web - Past Present and Future,  Commemorative Lecture 2002 Japan Prize,2002-04. • Eric Miller: Semantic Web, Phase 2: Developments and Deployment, presented at WWW2004W3C Track on the Semantic Web, 2004-05-20.
