  1. MCTS: Configuring Windows 7(70-680) Chapter 2, Lesson 2 Managing Virtual Hard Disks Files

  2. Lesson 2 Objectives • Create, mount, attach and deploy VHD files and create a bootable VHD • Use the Diskpart, BCDEdit and Disk Management tools • Use Windows Image to Virtual Hard Disk (WIN2VHD) to create VHD images from a WIM file • Describe the Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool and the GUI and command-line tools provided by WDS

  3. Creating a Native VHD: • Windows 7, native support for the VHD format. Means that VHD files can be created and modified without installing the Hyper-V server role. • Use the Disk Management Tool to create, attach and detach the VHD. • Diskpart Utility can be used instead of the Disk Management Tool. • E.g. DISKPART> create vdisk file=c\win7\myothervhd.vhd maximum=20000

  4. Booting from VHD: • Only Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise editions have the ability to boot from VHD. • Lets you boot the machine as if it where running the primary hard disk, and your OS recognizes all the hardware available on your system. • Ability to create multiple VHD with multiple OS’s installed on them. • Use the BCDEdit command to enable a VHD file as a boot option. (Note: Make sure you run your command prompt in “As Administrator”. • E.g. bcdedit /V This command tests if your boot entry is created.

  5. Windows Image to Virtual Hard Disk Tool • Use Windows Image to Virtual Hard Disk (WIN2VHD) command line tool to create VHD images from any Windows 7 installation source or a WIM file. • WIN2VHD can create VHD’s that boot directly to Out of the Box Experince (OOBE). • WIM2VHD tool runs from the Cscript command e.g. Cscript wim2vhd.wsf. /wim:<winPath>

  6. Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool “solution accelerator” • Use the Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool to update VHD content e.g. operating system updates. • Can be configured to boot the client computer from the VHD just long enough for the VHD to receive updates from either System Centre Configuration Manager (SCCM 2007) or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). • System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) must be installed before you can use the Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool. • SCVMM manages the virtualized data center. • SCVMM works with the Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool to keep virtual machines and VHD’s upto date.

  7. Windows Deployment Services (WDS): • WDS enables you to deploy Windows 7 Enterprise or Ultimate remotely to bootable VHD’s on client computers. • Provides network-based installation of Windows operating systems. Note: review the web casts on the CD. • Provides the Windows Deployment Service MMC snap-in GUI and the WDSUTIL command line tool. • WDSUTIL command line tool can perform all deployment tasks, including pre-staging client computers. • Used to Create a Capture image, Add a Boot Image, Create a Discover Image, Add an Install Image, Export an Image, Update/Replace an Image. • E.g. WDSUTIL /Verbose /Progress /Add-images /ImageFile:<path to wim file> /ImageType:Install • Should be installed on a server running Windows 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  8. Lesson 2 Review

  9. Lesson 2 Summary • Use the Diskpart and Disk Management tools to create, attach and initialize VHD’s • Use Sysprep tool to generalize and Image and remove computer specific information. • WDS provides tools that allow you to create and manage images for online deployment. • Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool works with SCVMM on a server running Windows to schedule updates of images on offline VHDs.
