Characterization • Characterization-the technique by which authors develop characters. • There are two forms of characterization: indirect and direct.
Direct Characterization • Direct characterization: when the author or narrator directly tells the reader what the character is like. • Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.” • Explanation: The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. The boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.”
Indirect Characterization • Indirect characterization: when the author gives information about a character and allows the reader to draw his or her own conclusions about that character • There are five different methods of indirect characterization: • Speech • Thoughts • Effects on other • Actions • Looks • Use the mnemonic device of STEAL to remember the five types of indirect characterization
