Water Storage • Most of the water on Earth (97%) is stored in the OCEANS as saline (salt) water • The remaining 3% is freshwater and can be stored as SURFACE WATER OR GROUND WATER • Even though cells contain 70 to 90 percent water, very little of the available water on Earth is trapped within living things.

  3. THE ATMOSPHEREalso contains water in the form of water vapor (gas)

  5. Processes in the Water Cycle:FLOWS • Evaporation adds water to the atmosphere. Water is constantly evaporating into the atmosphere from bodies of water, soil and organisms. (90% from bodies of water, 10% from surface of plants.)

  6. Water vapor cools as it rises forming clouds from dust particles and condensed water droplets. It falls to the earth, leaving the atmosphere as precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, hail, or fog.)

  7. Transpiration is a process that causes plants to take up water in their roots to replace the water that is being lost in their leaves through evaporation. • Animals and plants release water through cellular respiration. • Animals release water through perspirationandexcretion.

  8. Water can enter a storage reservoir through overland RUNOFF, or groundwater SEEPAGE • Water can enter the groundwater reservoir by INFILTRATION (percolation) into the soil.
