  2. Caritas-love (Latin) Caritas Australia helps people help themselves — regardless of race, religion or political beliefs. Farm project in Afghanistan

  3. Caritas supports long-term development programs in impoverished communities in Africa, Asia, East Timor, Latin America, Indigenous Australia and the Pacific

  4. A child with drawings he created as part of a Caritas Australia-supported early childhood development program Afghanistan

  5. …helping oppressed people to rediscover their dignity by taking greater control over their lives and overcoming poverty. Survivors of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo

  6. Our values Our work is shaped by the tradition of Catholic Social Teaching (CST). Caritas Australia's partner in Cambodia, Salvation Centre, helped this girl's family generate income.

  7. These values provide a moral framework so the common good of individuals and humanity can unite. CST covers all spheres of life – the economic, political, personal and spiritual, and is a transition from less human conditions to more human ones. Growing rice under Caritas Australia's 'promoting sustainable change' (Kampong Chhang) program, Cambodia.

  8. Treating people with dignity has to be the centre of our concerns and that is often done by not only sharing our skills, money and talent, but our humanity. A mother and child who have participated in Caritas Australia's programs in the Goma and Butembo Parishes of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

  9. This holistic approach, with all the principles flowing into one another is what Pope Paul VI called ‘authentic development’.

  10. Where we work

  11. Human Rights of the ChildConvention on the Rights of the Child

  12. For the purposes of the present Convention, a child means every human being below the age of eighteen years unless under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier. “

  13. The CRC recognizes the child as the bearer of his or her own human rights. These rights are not derived from or dependent upon rights of parents or any other adult.

  14. The CRC states a clear prohibition of discrimination among children (Art. 2) • Art 3(1) formulates the overall guiding principle - „the best interest of the child“

  15. The CRC includes over 50 separate articles, the entire document is based on four • foundational principles: • children should be free from discrimination • government policies should be based on the best interests of the child • children should survive and develop to their full potential • children’s views and perspectives are important and need to be heard.

  16. The CRC refers to the family as the fundamental group of society and the natural environment for the growth and well-being of its members, particularly children.

  17. Caritas is the international aid and development organisation of the Catholic Church in Australia. We are a member of the Fundraising Institute of Australia and the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID).
